Chart Analysis

'LOVE IS ENDING'? NOT FOR THE CHARLATANS!: Venerable UK vets The Charlatans return in a big way with "Love is Ending" (The End), which debuts atop the Mediaguide Alternative Specialty Song chart while picking up enough spins to also check in at No.3 on the Album end. There it trails only the indomitable Arcade Fire with The Suburbs (Merge), which remains at No.1 for the third consecutive week, and La La Land trio Best Coast, who remain at No.2 for the second straight week with Crazy for You (Mexican Summer), with the majority of airplay going to "Boyfriend," which ranks at No.7 on the Song side. The Charlatans displace the two-time defending champs, Ra Ra Riot, who slip to No.2 with "Boy" and have a corresponding drop to No.4 on the Album index with The Orchard (Barsuk). The Dandy Warhols advance 14-3 with "This is the Tide," helping Best of the Capitol Years 1995-2007 (Capitol) vault 25-5 on the Album end. Alt supergroup Tired Pony, which features Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody, Belle & Sebastian's Richard Colburn and R.E.M.'s Peter Buck, bows at No.4 on the Song side with "Dead American Writers," helping debut full-length The Place We Ran From (Mom & Pop) to the No.6 slot on the Album chart. Ray LaMontagne & the Pariah Dogs--great name!!!--move into the Top 10 at No.9 with "Beg, Steal or Borrow," allowing God Willin' & the Creek Don't Rise (RCA) to jump 26-12 on the Album end. Also entering the Top 10 (at No.10) is the comeback single from Soundgarden, "Black Rain," which has been turning heads and perking up ears throughout cyberspace. Full-length Telephantasm (A&M/UMe) advances 23-16 in its second week on the charts.
