The King Blues - Let's Hang The Landlord (Field Recordings/Island)
The King Blues is a London-based sextet whose reggae-tinged songs of
political protest have won a fervent following in their native land.
Carrying on with the proud punk tradition of such similarly minded
acts as the Clash
and featuring two acoustic guitars, a ukulele and a Melodeon, The
King Blues' sound is a marvelous mixture of ska elements, street
poetry, working-class protest folk, dub bass lines and doowop
melodies, all delivered with a snarling punk attitude that's
attracted the attention of some influential tastemakers. BBC Radio
One's Mike Davies stated that their initial full-length, Under
the Fog, was his "favorite album of the year," while fellow
BBC Radio One jock Zane Lowe enthused, "A bit of summer ska for
you, big with our chat room, sounds great!" Now signed to Field
Recordings/Island, The King Blues is looking to spread their message
beyond the UK to the entire world and this video is just one of the
many steps they are taking.

TVOTR TAKES BACK THE
POLE POSITION: After a week in which they tumbled all the way
down to No.2 on the Mediaguide Alternative Specialty Song chart,
hipster faves TV on the Radio reclaimed the top spot with "Dancing
Choose," switching places with last week's No.1, Kings of Leon
with "Sex on Fire." TV on the Radio also regained the top slot on
the Album end with Dear Science (Touch and Go/Interscope),
while Kings of Leon's Only by the Night (RCA), last week's
No.1, dropped to No.3, behind the resurgent Verve's Forth
(On Your Own). Emiliana Torrini spends a second consecutive week at
No.4 on the Song side with "Me and Armini," the title track of
her new Rough Trade album, which drops a slot to No.5. Moving into
the No.4 position on the Album index is Ra Ra Riot with The Rhumb
Line (Barsuk), which attains that lofty position despite a
complete lack of individual songs in the Top 20. Top debut honors on
the Song side go to Keane with "Spiralling," which bows at No.5
and helps forthcoming full-length Perfect Symmetry (Universal
Island) to a No.9 spot on the Album end. Other songs debuting on the
Song chart this week include Snow Patrol at No.9 with "Take Back
the City" (Geffen), Annuals at No.11 with "Confessor"
(Canvasback), Secret Machines at No.12 with "Atomic Heels"
(TSM/World's Fair) and My Morning Jacket at No.15 with "I'm
Amazed" (ATO)--and, as an aside, we can't wait to witness MMJ at
the Greek Theater on Sunday, September 21!
Finally, we'd be
remiss if we failed to mention the passing of one of the true rock &
roll greats, keyboardist extraordinaire Richard Wright of Pink Floyd,
who passed away of cancer on Monday, September 15 at age 65. A
principle architect of the Floyd's signature sound, he now becomes
another stellar player in "The Great Gig in the Sky"--also the
title of his classic contribution to the best-selling Dark Side of
the Moon. R.I.P.

BEST BUY CAPTURES NAPSTER: Leading retail chain Best Buy, currently the third-largest music retailer in the U.S., has filled a significant hole in its digital profile by purchasing Napster in a $54 million deal. The proposed acquisition, which includes the company's database of 700,000 subscribers along with Napster's Web-based customer service and mobile capabilities, is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2008. In addition, Napster CEO Chris Gorog and other key senior leaders have entered into employment agreements with Best Buy, ensuring they will stay with the company. Best Buy expects Napster and its 140 employees will remain in the current Los Angeles headquarters, with no plans for personnel reductions at this time.
"This transaction offers Best Buy a recognized platform for enhancing our capabilities in the digital media space and building new, recurring relationships with customers," said Brian Dunn, President and COO of Best Buy. "Over time we hope to strengthen our offerings to consumers, who we believe will increasingly seek devices and solutions that enable them to access their content wherever, whenever and however they want."
"We believe Napster brings us excellent capabilities in the mobility space, as well as international operations and an established team of technology experts," added Dave Morrish, EVP Connected Digital Solutions of Best Buy. "We can foresee Napster acting as a platform for accelerating our growth in the emerging industry of digital entertainment, beyond music subscriptions. We're very excited to add these capabilities to leverage our existing relationships with the labels, the studios, and the hardware providers. We believe Napster will be an outstanding addition to our already robust portfolio of partners and offerings in the digital music space."
"We believe Best Buy will be an ideal partner for Napster and are very excited by the benefits that this transaction delivers to our shareholders, partners and employees," stated Napster CEO Chris Gorog. "Best Buy is uniquely positioned to benefit from Napster's digital entertainment distribution platform. We are looking forward to combining our digital media capabilities with Best Buy's resources and global network to extend our digital content platforms."
