Ah, the return of
The Pink Logs. Most recently, the Logs were spotted at MUSEXPO 2008
on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles. The paparazzi that usually stalks
Britney, Lindsay and Paris were on hand taking pics of the Logs with
the likes of Carter Armstrong (VP Music, Warner Bros. Pictures),
Alicen Catron Schneider (VP Music Services, NBC Universal
Television), John & Jesse Kongos, Katy Perry (Capital Recording
Artist), Kyle Mortensen (A.I. Music), Ted Cohen (Founder, TAG
Strategic) and Jason Soudah (Donymar Recording Artist)

MININOVA OVERTAKES
PIRATE BAY: Though The Pirate Bay BitTorrent site is the best
known in the downloading world, another site has actually moved
beyond Pirate Bay in terms of sheer numbers of physical downloads:
Mininova,
which passed the four billion download mark on February 18 and is on
a pace to rack up another billion downloads within 90 days of that
date.
The breakdown of what's
being downloaded shows that the MPAA and television studios will soon
be grappling with the problems that have plagued the RIAA and music
biz for the past decade: over 60% of the files downloaded from
Mininova are from the film/TV realm, as opposed to just less than 20%
of total downloaded files being music-related. One thing is for sure,
though: the increasing acceptance of BitTorrent sites by consumers,
despite legal obstacles thrown in their way by organizations like the
RIAA, indicates that more difficult times are ahead for the
entertainment industry.

The Vibrants "First Move" (Unsigned)
It was an eventful 2007
for The Vibrants, an unsigned quintet from London that's been
steadily building a buzz through incessant touring in both the UK and
North America. Drawing upon influences ranging from The Who to The
Police and Talking Heads, The Vibrants are rapidly building a rep as
one of the most exciting and...um, "vibrant"...new live acts on
the scene. The summer of 2007 featured shows at KoKo World
Environment Day and Canadian Music Week, plus a second appearance at
North by Northeast, where the group performed three times, including
the official opening and closing parties of the festival. The fall of
last year witnessed the digital release of the group's Retaliate
EP, which helped lead to support slots with such fellow up-and-coming
acts as Guillemots, Nine Black Alps and The Subways, among others.
The new year started on a high, with the band playing with Mika and
The Feeling for the launch of the new Fiat 500 in front of 2000 fans,
a performance that inspired glowing reviews and led to Fashion Week
invitations. The Vibrants just finished up a successful showcase at
MUSEXPO 2008 and are currently wrapping up their West Coast tour in
the US. In June the band returns to NXNE 2008 and will continue
recording new music and touring in the UK.

Editors - An End
Has A Start (Kitchenware Records)
Since forming in 2002,
the Birmingham, England-based Editors--Tom Smith (vocals, guitar,
piano), Chris Urbanowicz (lead guitar, synths), Russell Leetch (bass,
backing vocals) and Ed Lay (drums, percussion, backing vocals)--have
slowly but surely wended their way up through the ranks of rock &
roll stardom, to the point that they're now commonly referred to as
the UK's second-biggest debut act of the decade, trailing only
Arctic Monkeys. Signed to British indie Kitchenware Recordings in
2004, they released their debut album, The Back Room, in July
2005. Subsequent support slots for the likes of Franz Ferdinand and
Stellastar helped spread the word, leading to a North American
release of The Back Room through Fader/Epic in March 2006.
After the release Editors further raised their profile by playing
both Coachella and Lollapalooza in 2006, whereupon they retreated to
an Irish studio for two months with famed mixer/producer Jacknife Lee
to record their second album, An End Has a Start, which was
released in 2007 and had a single that hit No.1 on the Mediaguide
U.S. Alternative Specialty Song chart last year, "Smokers Outside
the Hospital Doors." Nominated for "Best British Group" at the
2008 Brit Awards, Editors recently landed another high-profile
support slot, for R.E.M.'s European tour this summer.

GOING FOR THE
SANTOGOLD: That would be Brooklyn-based artist Santi White, nee
Santogold, who moves 7-1 and ascends to the top of the Mediaguide
Alternative Specialty Song chart with "L.E.S. Artistes," the
first offering from her self-titled Downtown/Lizard King release
(which clocks in at No.2 on the Album end). Currently the beneficiary
of a wave of positive press in just about every publication known to
mankind, Santogold is in the midst of a Euro jaunt until early June,
whereupon she'll return Stateside for a June 7 performance for KITS
"Live 105" San Francisco's "BFD" at the Shoreline
Amphitheater. For full details on all things Santogold, head on over
to her MySpace at www.myspace.com/santogold.
Top debut on the Song side this week belongs to Liverpudlian electro
mavens Ladytron with "Ghosts," the initial single from the
forthcoming Nettwerk album Velocifero (available in June). It
bows at No.2 on the Song side, picking up enough spins to also claim
the No. 3 slot on the Album end. Look for them in North America
starting May 20, with all the dates listed at
www.myspace.com/ladytron.
Reclaiming the top spot on the Album chart is Death Cab for Cutie
with Narrow Stairs (Atlantic), aided by a pair of tunes in the
Top 20 on the Song side: "Long Division" at No.15, just ahead of
former No.1 number "I Will Possess Your Heart" at No.16. Despite
an electrifying performance on "Saturday Night Live" this past
Saturday, previous No.1 act My Morning Jacket slips to No.4 on the
Song side with "Touch Me I'm Going to Scream Part 2," while
full-length Evil Urges (ATO) lands at No.5 on the Album
endÉjust ahead of Nine Inch Nails' latest self-released project,
The Slip, which lands at No.6 despite no single song cracking
the Top 20.
