The Pink Logs met up
with Stealing
Love Jones in South Africa for some downtime. As the
band was taking a break from touring and recording their next album,
The Pink Logs jumped at the opportunity to test out their brand new
couch and catch up with some old friends. Although we're not sure
what was going on, these were the only pictures we could print
without getting in any legal trouble.

Kelly Blatz - Capra
(band)/Prom
Night (movie)
First things
first...had you seen the original "Prom Night" with Jamie Lee
Curtis before you were offered the part? Honestly, no I
did not. I actually never knew that this was a remake until late in
the auditioning process. When I found out that I got the part, I
didn't think that it was necessary to see the original, so I still
haven't seen it 'til this day. Sorry JLC you know I love
you--especially in "My Girl" 1 and 2.
Not
an exact remake of the Jamie Lee Curtis film from the '80s; that
classic seems to serve more as an inspiration to the new movie. What
differences can we expect to see in "Prom Night" (2008)? Yes
it was definitely an inspiration for the new film. When I asked the
producers of the movie, they said that they were not creating an
ersatz version of the original, which is usually what happens. They
said that they took the name from the original and that the story was
almost completely different. The new film is more of a cop thriller
than a slasher flick. Think "Se7en" as opposed to "Urban
Legends." There is always the horror movie that when you walk
out of it you feel scared but know that the killer was heightened
reality. Then there are the horror movies that you walk out and you
feel like the guy following you in the Chipotle line ordering the
burrito with everything but the meat is taking you home to throw some
paprika on you and make a delish burrito. Think "Hannibal."
The types of people that are all around us. To me that is more
frightening. You
are extremely busy right now, with many projects happening at
once...what's the one thing you can always go back to that calms you
down and gets you "away from it all," if only for a couple of
minutes?
I know this is cliché
but I would definitely have to say my family. As soon as I walk in
that front door, it's as if the smell of the scented candle my mom
puts on the mantle just whisks away any sort of stress or madness
that has been going on for the past month. I can just walk in, throw
my stuff down, grab some of my dad's meatloaf and sit around the
table and just laugh. I can rely on that house no matter where I am
at in my career. It really is a beautiful thing and I think we all
know that. What's your favorite perk of
being part of the Hollywood crowd? Well I am not really
sure what the "Hollywood" crowd is, really. I don't think
that I am part of it or am ever going to be a part of it. I have an
AMAZING group of friends, everyone from my best friends from high
school to my brothers in my band or the people that I have worked
with. I think that it is really important to surround yourself with
positive, genuine people. People that want to be around you because
of you, not because of what you do. Those are the types of people
that I will continue to surround myself with throughout my life.
What's next for
you, are there any big summer plans? Yes; this
summer is going to be a hefty one. I am moving to Toronto in May to
shoot a TV series called "Aaron Stone" for about six
months. Driving Ferraris and doing martial arts; it's nuts. I am very
blessed; it is going to be an incredible experience. Toronto is one
of my favorite cities. And then there is a film that I did called
"From Within" that is premiering at Tribeca Film Festival
this year and should be released in the late summer or fall
hopefully. So chicky check it out. (That's KELLY saying "check
it out" but scratched on a turntable).
If you
absolutely had to choose music or acting, which would it be? Well,
I am going to play a little table tennis right now and hit it right
back to you and say that the situation could never exist. I will
never stop playing music, as well as I will never stop acting. These
are the two things that I have love and passion for and there is no
reason that I can't do both. Whether it's playing music in arenas or
playing in my garage that is all I need. Whether it's acting in a
huge film, or reading a play with my friend, that is all I need. In a
perfect world, I will be able to tour with my band on my breaks from
acting work. And I will fight with every fiber of my being to make
that happen.

The Locarnos "Give
It To Me Straight" (South West Recordings)
The Locarnos are a
young quartet from Taunton, Somerset, England, all aged 17 or 18,
that first formed in 2006 after meeting at school. Their name was
selected when the lads were studying the post-World War I Locarno
Treaty, while their sound reflects the eclectic, diverse influences
enjoyed by the four members, ranging from Deep
Purple to David
Bowie, Cat
the Dog to the Police
and Stevie
Wonder to the Smiths,
all mashed together to create relentlessly up-tempo pop confections
bearing just the slightest suggestion of '80s electro-pop. Despite
the fact that they just released their first single,
"Give It to Me
Straight," on Saint Patrick's Day 2008, the group has already
picked up some heavyweight supporters in their native UK: they
performed a Maida Vale session on Steve Lamacq's BBC Radio One show
in January of this year, while fellow Radio One jock Zane Lowe has
been spinning "Give It to Me Straight" on his "Fresh Meat"
program. In addition, they have also been deemed Lamacq's "New
Favourite Band" on BBC Radio Six. "As a band, they are hard to
fault," says the London-based blog Backstage Pass. "Good vocals,
interesting guitar and a rhythm section that holds it all together."

School of Language
"Rockist" (Memphis Industries)
In April 2007 the
well-regarded Sunderland, England trio known as Field Music announced
a hiatus from all band activities in order that the three core
members could more fully realize their musical potential and
productivity. While not a breakup in the traditional sense, the three
would use Field Music as a way to produce more and better music. The
first test of that proposition is David Brewis' new project, School
of Language. The debut album, Sea from Shore, was released in
February by Memphis Industries in the UK and Thrill Jockey in
America. Recorded primarily by Brewis himself, the compositions are
full of cut-n-paste tangents that are quite different from Field
Music's earlier work, moving from intricate and unplayable to
solitary and unadorned. A couple of Brewis' hometown friends show
up on the track "Disappointment '99": Futureheads
members David Craig and Barry Hyde provide vocal assistance, with
Hyde also adding some guitar work. School of Language is currently in
the midst of its first tour of America, with Brewis accompanied by
some accomplished musicians in their own right: bassist Doug McCombs
(Tortoise,
Eleventh
Dream Day, Brokeback)
and drummer Ryan Rapsis (Euphone,
Ambulette).

FOALS RUN FOR THE
ROSES: With the Kentucky Derby less than three weeks away, we
suppose it's only fitting that Sub Pop's Foals are ruling the
roost on both the Mediaguide Alternative Specialty Song and Album
indexes. "Balloons" tops the Song charts, leaping 11-1, while the
recently released Antidotes repeats the feat on the Album end.
The self-described "snotty art school dropouts hungry for the
dollar" will be landing on North American shores on April 22,
touring the Northeast and Midwest before a three-gig jaunt to Japan,
followed by a West Coast swing May 22-30. Check their official
website, www.wearefoals.com,
for when they'll be hitting your neck of the woods. Following hot
on the heels of Foals are indie heroes Tapes 'N Tapes, who clock in
at No. 2 with "Hang Them All" (XL), racking up enough spins to
also claim the No.2 spot on the Album index. Top debut on the Song
side goes to the new side project from Arctic Monkeys' Alex Turner,
The Last Shadow Puppets, who bow at No.5 with "The Age of the
Understatement," the title track from their forthcoming Domino
debut. The song, which wouldn't sound too out of place on an Ennio
Morricone spaghetti western soundtrack, picks up enough plays to also
earn a No.8 place on the Album chart. Also enjoying nice debuts are
The Kooks at No.6 with "Always Where I Need to Be," propelling
full-length Konk (Astralwerks) to a No.9 showing on the Album
end. Also enjoying a Top 10 debut on the Song side is the marvelously
monikered Does It Offend You, Yeah?, who make an appearance at No.8
with "We Are Rockstars," helping recently released full-length
You Have No Idea What You Are Getting Yourself Into (Almost
Gold) to a No.11 spot on the Album index.
