Liquid Courage Music
- Music Supervisor/Consultant
KCRW Radio 89.9 Los
Angeles - On Air Personality, 3-6 on Alternative Saturday
Nights
How
were you introduced to the business?
It
was 1981 where I found the Rudeboy/Ska culture and that was the
beginning. I first started working in music at KLOS as a call
screener in the early 90's. Around 1994, I heard this band called
Sublime that I fell in love with the first time I heard them. I knew
they were in Los Angles at the time at a label named Skunk Records. I
wrote a few letters to the management about coming in and working for
with the label and the band. After pestering them long enough, I was
invited to come down and be a part of the team. At the time I was
coming to the end of my career working on an Ambulance for almost a
decade. It was not till 1996, where I really got my feet wet working
at Fox Sports Network.
What
were your responsibilities at Fox Sports & Fox Sports Net Music
Dept.?
I
was the music assistant and also did light supervision work on shows.
I was asked to be a part of a new division where three of my other
colleagues helped develop Fox Sports Net. It was a new company and
they wanted to have their own music department. When I first started,
my jobs were from basic cue sheets to working on music placement for
the produced shows. Sometimes I would have to go into the studios and
co-produce theme songs for show opens. At any giving time we were
working on 4-5 shows a day, including the opens for Football and
Baseball. Right before the turn of the century, both the music
department of Fox Sports Net and Fox Sports combined and our
responsibility for music was even greater. As a team we shared our
music with each other and also with other divisions at Fox.
Give
a brief overview/background of your experience.
I
have worked in TV at Fox and Speed Channel. I was also at a music
agency called Groove Addicts where I learned many aspects of that
world. At GA, the things that we worked on ranged from music for
commercials, in-house library, movies to trailers. My favorite job at
Groove Addicts was the LAPD trailers. The trailers were shown in the
theaters and were shot like a Michael Mann movie. Our job was to
place music and also sound design. SWAT came down to our offices and
even LAPD telecommunications for voiceover work. We had a few
screenings including ones with the mayor; police chief Braton and
city counsel, during a weekly meeting.
I
have worked at various radio stations also including KCRW, which I
can't get enough of, Soundbreak.com (one of the first web radio
stations), KLOS and also Fox Sports radio where I was a board op for
one show and co-producer on another show. I've got to say, live
talk radio was fun.
When
you are on air at KCRW, you never know what you might hear on your
show. How do you come up with your playlist?
Sometimes
I really don't know what I want to play until that night; it all
depends on the mood I am in. Then there are other times where I hear
a song and I go nuts over it. I especially like to play jazz because
its one of the few music's that can start off so simple and become
so complex in a mater of seconds and spring right back to a simple
pop riff.
KCRW
may have been around for a while but it has proved to be one of the
best stations in the world. I am very thankful to be a part of that
crew. The DJ's alone have taught me about music and have helped me
grow and expand to where I am today. That is the gift I can never
repay. The best I can do is play music for the listener that I have
heard before or even searched out and teach them about new music and
expand their mind. Does that make sense? I get thrilled everyday I
hear a new track or a new artist I really like.
How
did you get your start at Liquid Courage Music?
LCM
is me but don't tell the tax folks. I just use LCM as a consulting
company to work on various projects. Some of the many I have worked
for include Speed Channel, Fox Sports Promo, Allure Entertainment
(film called "House at the End of the Drive") and most recently
with EvolutionUSA on a project.
In
your experiences, how has the music business changed the most from
the day you started to today?
Without
me going on a lengthy tangent, I will say no comment...Ok a small one
will do. To me it's changed. It's not the handshake world
anymore. It has become a tad corporate and it's a shame. I think
many people get in this business for the lifestyle and not realizing
its not just fun and games...though it can be, but you have to earn
it.
Looking
back at your career so far, what are some of the accomplishments that
have stood out?
I
just like to make people smile.

M.I.A.
"Paper Planes" (Interscope)
Mathangi Arulpragasam has
many talents. She's a singer, songwriter, rapper, producer and
painter. She was #21 on USA
Today's 100 Most Interesting People of 2007.
Still doesn't ring a bell? Her stage name is M.I.A. and she is
blurring the walls of Alternative, hip-hop, dancehall, electro and
pop music. M.I.A.'s song "Paper Planes"
is already getting support at Alternative with over 50 spins at KDLD
Indie 103.1 Los Angeles, XM Radio, WROX Norfolk, Hot AC spins on KYSR
Los Angeles, AAA love from WXPN Philadelphia, KRCL Salt Lake City and
even Top 40 WEZB New Orleans.
The
musical journey started when M.I.A. was asked to do the artwork and
cover for Elastica's
album,
The Menace,
and through that friendship, she followed the band on tour in the
United States. She ended up directing the video "Mad Dog" for
Elastica and made friends with the opening band on the tour, Peaches.
Peaches introduced M.I.A. to the Roland MC-505 (that's a beat
machine for those of you that wondered) and from that point on,
M.I.A. was hooked.
Her
latest album, Kala,
was named one of the best albums of 2007 by Rolling Stone and
Blender. Her song "Come Around" was available as a bonus track on
Timbaland's
Shock
Value
UK & Japan release.

Raine
Maida - Yellow Brick Road (Nettwerk)
Best known to the world
as the lead singer of one of the most successful Canadian Rock bands
in history, Our Lady Peace, Raine Maida has recently released a solo
disc titled "Hunter's Lullaby." This collection of 10 songs is
a musical departure from anything he has done in the past with OLP.
These songs include more melodies and show a more intense side of
Raine; he also raps. But, have no fear, the CD is full of songs that
any OLP fan would love and many new fans will surely enjoy.
The album was recorded in
Raine's personal studio and is described by Raine as "a
collection of poems put to music." Raine's wife, Chantal
Kreviazuk, is also featured on the album on a few songs playing the
piano and contributing vocals.
The first single to be
released is "Yellow Brick Road." In this video, Raine teams up
with War Child Canada, to raise $30,000 to build a school in Congo,
while playing every busy corner he could find in Canada, pleasing
hundreds of fans that are eager to donate to the cause.

NADA SURF GETS
LUCKY...ALL THE WAY TO #1: Brooklyn-based
indie heroes Nada Surf made a big splash on the Mediaguide
Alternative Specialty charts this week, bowing at #1 on both the Song
chart (with "Whose Authority") and the Album index with their
fifth full-length release, Lucky (Barsuk). European readers of
hush hush ATTACK should check the trio out in February, when
they hit the dusty touring trail with support act Rogue Wave. Hanging
strong on the Album end is Sons & Daughters, whose "Gilt
Complex" (Domino) single remains at #2...which is rather odd, as
the single itself fell to #3 on the Song side, raising the question:
When did Mediaguide start utilizing Diebold? (That's just a joke,
campers...we love our buds at Mediaguide!) Moving up to #2 on the
Song side is another promising young Brooklyn-based act, MGMT, with
"Time to Pretend"--helping full-length Oracular Spectacular
to a #3 debut on the Album chart. Impressive debuts on the Song side
this week from Zox, which lands a #4 position for "Goodnight"
(Side One Dummy), which helps album Line in the Sand to the #7
slot. On the Album side, the top debut goes to second-generation New
Zealand rocker Liam Finn, whose I'll Be Lightning (Yep Roc)
bows at #4 thanks to play for multiple songs, with "Second Chance"
garnering the most notice from the specialty panel (appearing at #16
on the Song chart). Maintaining nicely at #5 on the Album index is
English quartet Air Traffic with Fractured Life
(Astralwerks/EMI), which currently boasts a pair of tunes on the Song
chart: "Charlotte" moves 10-7, while "Come On" debuts at #14.
Finally, a shoutout to Birmingham, England band Mexicolas, who debut
on both charts this week with their self-released single, "Come
Clean"--it makes its initial appearance on the Song chart at #8,
gaining enough airplay for it to also achieve a #17 spot on the Album
end.
