Headway "The Start" (Genepool/Suretone Records)
Hailing from Nottingham, England, Headway is a young quintet of Brits who first formed in 2003 and have already received airplay on the likes of Xfm London, MotorFM Germany, Indie 103.1 Los Angeles, KPNT St Louis and MTV fm. Now being guided in the studio by production guru Josh Abraham (who is known for his work with Velvet Revolver, 30 Seconds To Mars, Staind, Weezer, Orgy and Courtney Love, among others), this talented five-piece unleashes "The Start," the first track from The Start EP, a limited-edition import. This initial taste of Headway is a powerful song that would fit in at a variety of formats. Jordan Schur of Suretone Records/Interscope was so impressed with Headway that he personally signed the band--talk about building a buzz!

Kate Nash - "Foundations" (Geffen)
In less than two years English singer/songwriter Kate Nash has gone from near-complete obscurity to having a song at #2 on the UK singles charts. After suffering a broken foot when she was 18, Nash (who just turned 20 in July) found solace in writing songs on her guitar. In February 2006 she set up a MySpace music page to showcase her new tunes...and in the 21 months since she has amassed nearly seven million separate plays, routinely topping 30,000 listens per day in recent weeks and drawing favorable comparisons to fellow UK chanteuse Lily Allen, who herself described Nash as the "next big thing." She released her first single (through UK indie Moshi Moshi Records) in February 2007, and the instant success of "Caroline's a Victim" prompted her signing by Fiction Records a month later. The song "Foundations" was released in the UK on June 25 and rapidly ascended to the #2 chart position, prompting Fiction to move up the release date of full-length Made of Bricks to August 6.

SIGUR ROS RULES ROOST: Another week, another artist atop the Mediaguide Alternative Specialty Song chart...this has been becoming a pattern recently. This week's honors go, once again, to Sigur Ros, who reclaim the #1 slot with "Hljmolind" (XL) after a one-week interruption by Bloc Party's "Flux" (Vice), which tumbles down to #6. Speaking of tumbling down the chart, Radiohead's self-released In Rainbows falls from #1 all the way down to #14, paving the way for--you guessed it--Band of Horses to once again seize the top spot on the Album end with Cease to Begin (Sub Pop), followed by the Hives with The Black and White Album (Octone/A&M) at #2 and the aforementioned Sigur Ros' Hvarf/Heim at #3. Top debut on the Song chart goes to West Indian Girl with the ominously titled "To Die in L.A." (Milan), which bows at #2; other nice debuts belong to Seether at #8 with "Fake It" (Wind-up), Sons and Daughters' wittily titled "Gilt Complex" (Domino) at #9 and De Novo Dahl's "Shout" (Roadrunner) at #10. A special shoutout goes out to Australia's Skybombers, who in the wake of a fabulous set at last week's "Passport Approved" night at the Viper Room make an appearance on the Song side with "It Goes Off" (Fur) at #16. Top debut on the Album side is a collaborative effort: artists including Eddie Vedder, Stephen Malkmus, John Doe, Sufjian Stevens, Cat Power, Karen O. and many, many others help the I'm Not There soundtrack bow at #4. The highly praised movie from Todd Haynes follows six different chapters in the life of the ever-enigmatic Bob Dylan...including one in which the stalwart songwriter is portrayed by actress Cate Blanchett, whose performance has been earning rave reviews.
