It
was (ideally) a dark, stormy night with the full moon shining
brightly down on Mr. Gutowski. The soft whispers of the cold wind
told him.... “start a blog my friend... start a blog”.
So, he did. After spending several years in advertising as a
copywriter and also rockin out as a systems analyst, David Gutowski
became a web developer. In 2001 he started the infamous blog
Largehearted
Boywith
the goal of “sharing the love”. And share he has done,
I’ve personally snagged many great mp3s from his site in the
past few years. I wanted to feature this blog awhile back, but
unfortunately it took David a mere TWO MONTHS to respond. I do feel
though that it was worth the wait, and we have since kissed and made
up. Lastly, before you go ripping mp3s uncontrollably, tease the
blog a bit... ya know, some viral foreplay, read some of the stuff
listed, its not all about the happy ending of the free mp3s!

Jobs: picked fruits as a farm laborer, flipping burgers at
McDonald’s, bag boy at a supermarket…these jobs have
kept me humble and appreciative of working with my passion –
‘music’
--STARTING
TO DIG--
>>How did you
get into the music biz?
Working
as an intern at a college radio station in Fresno
>>What
did you want to be when you were 10?
I
knew I wanted to do something that I was passionate about and could
have a positive impact on humanity (bring the world together through
music).
>>..and
what did your parents want you to be?
Doctor,
teacher or some profession where I’d be able to do what I loved
that would allow me to take care of my family once I got married and
also give something back to the community
>>If
you had a musical genie that could grant you 3 wishes for the
industry, what would they be? 1.
Get rid of those who are in the business for the fashion (because
it’s perceived cool…I like to be surrounded by those who
are in it for the passion) 2. Put away egos and focus on doing
something that unites us all for the common good of the artist, the
consumer and our industry and the world as a whole (you can only do
that if everyone has an upside) 3. Focus on quality NOT quantity.
Too often people are opportunists and want to make a quick buck. In
order to keep music healthy we need to invest in taking pride and
care in the work that we do so that future generations will continue
to love music. It truly is the world’s best communicator and
bring people together unlike anything else. Music to me is as vital
as the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat.
>>Mentors
you’ve had in the music industry:
There
are many (besides my parents), but for the past 14 years, I’d
have to say Mel
Medalie
from the legendary Champion
Records
in the UK. He has taught me so much in the most unconventional ways
about life, music and the pursuit to happiness. He is the man who
originally signed and/or helped develop artists such as Will
Smith,
Faithless,
Dido
and many others when no one believed in them. He is very passionate
about music, people, life and never takes anything or anyone for
granted. He’s always been there for me rain or shine and is
loyalty, trust and integrity is so on par that Mel is family to me.
Barry
Dickins
who is the co-founder of one of England’s most successful
booking agencies. Barry has so much great energy, love of people,
music and all things Earth. Even at age 60+ he still has the teenage
spring in his musical step. I hope that when I’m his age, I
still have the passion, love, excitement for music. He’s also
given me some great advice over the years.
I’d
also have to say Nic
Harcourt
at KCRW,
who no matter how busy he is these days, continues to take the time
as a friend to check in and keep in touch and offer motivational and
inspirational support. He still loves music just as much as he did
when we first met 11 years ago and hasn’t changed as a person,
which is tough for many in this sometimes “ego” driven
business. He’s a good egg as we say in Wolverhampton.
>>Top
5 fav bands of 'right now' That’s
a tough one as there are so many (list in no particular
order)
Headway
(if you’re a fan of Coldplay,
Snow

Keane,
Radiohead…add
these guys to your list)
Exile
Parade
(produced by Oasis’
producer Owen
Morris)
Remi
Nicole
(absolutely *uckin’ brilliant…Lily

Nash

>>Worst
album of all time:
Honesty,
I respect all music whether I am a personal fan of it or not, so I’d
have to say I don’t really have one, as music is subjective and
what I love others may dislike and vice versa
>>Your
daily reads (i.e. blogs, ezines, websites)
Well
besides the plethora of emails, I have many. However, since I signed
an NDA…I can’t tell you all the global blogs, e-zines,
websites I connect with as it’d be giving proprietary
information….how’s that for a convincing way out from
sharing these secrets :)
>>How
can people get in touch with you? I
respect technology and it’s efficient, but impersonal. I
deliberately don’t have a MySpace, Facebook, etc. page as it
gives away too much information about people…I like to get to
know people over time and build a relationship as opposed to a
fast-food and disposable relationship (that’s what sadly a lot
of social networking sites provide…there are the few
exceptions of course), but mostly I use technology a lot for my day
to day work. But if you want to get in touch with me, I need to vibe
a person and connect with them in a more personal and human way.
Therefore, face to face meetings (when time permits), phone, email
are preferred. With that being said, best way is email:

GETHIN PEARSON & THE SCENERY –
“Lost At Sea” (unsigned, UK)
I’ll keep it
short and to the point. Gethin
Pearson
has one of the most unique and compelling voices I’ve heard in
a very long time.. Not too sure who or what “The Scenery”
is, but who cares! With airplay on BBC
Radio 1
and also Indie
103.1fm
in Los Angeles as an unsigned artist, the labels are quickly flocking
to this one. Check out “Lost At Sea” by clicking HERE

RAINE MAIDA – “Sex Love and Honey” (Kingnoise,
Canada)
You know Raine Maida but you just don’t realize
it. He’s best known as the frontman and songwriter for the
band Our
Lady Peace,
the Canadian rock group that has sold over 5 million albums to date.
His influences range from Bob Dylan to Leonard Cohen to Saul Williams
so lyrics are most definitely a sticking point with his songs. For a
lack of better words, check out this video for “Sex Love and
Honey”!

GAHAN
GAINS KEYS TO THE “KINGDOM”:
The past few weeks the panel has been particularly kind to old-school
Alt-rockers, but after two weeks perched atop the Mediaguide
Alternative Specialty Song index, Beck’s “Timebomb”
(Interscope) falls to #2, having been replaced by another
format-defining artist: Depeche Mode frontman David Gahan, whose
“Kingdom” debuts at the top of the chart. The first
single from his forthcoming Mute/Virgin solo effort, Hourglass
(due in stores October 22), also propels the full-length to #2 on the
Album side. Also on the Song chart, San Diego’s Pinback (Touch
and Go) makes an impressive debut at #3 with “From Nothing to
Nowhere,” which helps Autumn
of Seraphs
attain the #4 slot on the Album end. If you’re in California,
check out one of their in-stores this week to celebrate the album’s
release: they’re playing at Amoeba in both Hollywood and San
Francisco, as well as Fingerprints in Long Beach. A quick tip o’
the hat to Astralwerks’ VHS or Beta, whose Bring
on the Comets ascends
to the #1 position on the Album chart, helped in no small part by
lead single “Can’t Believe a Single Word,” which is
holding strong at #5 on the Song chart. Other noteworthy acts
debuting on the Song chart this week include Coheed and Cambria at #7
with “The Running Free” (Columbia), She Wants Revenge
(Flawless/Perfect Kiss/Geffen) at #9 with “True Romance”
and Jimmy Eat World at #12 with “Big Casino”
(Interscope). Finally, we’d be remiss if we didn’t offer
a quick shoutout to New York indie rockers Longwave, whose “No
Direction” makes an appearance at #15 on the Song chart. What’s
the big deal, you ask? Well, Longwave is truly “indie,”
self-releasing their music…which didn’t stop “No
Direction” from being featured on “Veronica Mars”
last winter, well before it was available for public consumption.
