As I’m sure many of you are already aware, there have been some changes in the world of hushhush ATTACK! in the past week. Without going into too much detail, the changes were long overdue. With that being said, we hope that you enjoy our newly revamped newsletter and welcome and encourage feedback! Let us know what you like, don’t like, or would like to see more of. It will continue to evolve in the coming months and we thank you for your early support. Cheers – hhA!
Blog-In
Let’s
be real about this one, anyone who uses the word “catalyst”
in a sentence without skipping a beat is good with me! Not to
mention the fact that their blog was started from an idea that person
had about creating a short-form show that features
interviews/performances from the likes of Imogen Heap, The Go! Team,
Cold War Kids, and other cool kids of that nature. Hell, this girl
went to a concert put on by the Cold War Kids that had less than a
dozen people in attendance, and that includes the band! The name of
this person? Jacinta. The name of the blog? beat
Lawrence.

--STARTING
TO DIG-- How
have you mixed music with your profession?
“I've
painted live at a few club events and music shows, one of them was
for legendary hip-hop artist Kool
Keith.
When I paint live, I transform into my alter-ego, and her name is
Paperboogie,
named so because when I paint along to music I just rock the canvas,
haha. Or in my case, wood, because I don't really like painting on
canvas all that much. Also, a lot of the design clients I work with
tend to be in the music or entertainment industry, so I've done a
bunch of album art, artist websites, flyers, etc. I love working with
entertainment people because it allows me to get a lot more
creative.”
Any
famous clients?
“I
illustrated a limited edition concert poster for Bjork.
I also did quite a few online banner designs for Interscope
Records
when I interned there this past Spring.”
What’s
your take on today’s music industry? “Nowadays
it seems as though some mainstream musicians are way too comfortable
putting out mediocre crap. Music that is way too over-commercialized,
way too cut-and-paste. Mainstream music's become so diluted,
and I think it's because of this that there's been a huge resurgence
of the indie/underground scene. People are looking elsewhere for
real, artistically crafted music, which is what makes Myspace,
Youtube,
and sites like hushhushattack
so damn awesome--they give the rest of the world exposure to awesome
raw talent.”
Gimme
five words that describe your art: “dreamy,
gritty, explosive, sexy, weightless”
What
are you up to now? “I
have a blog that I started up, called Paintbyword.
I create illustrations every few days based on words that people
around the world send me. Kind of like creating visual poetry. I then
put up the original illustration or the sketch up for sale on eBay.
The blog helps me in a few ways--it helps me to constantly produce
work, I get a lot of practice, and my word power is expanding
everyday.”

BO
PEPPER
– “Blink And You’ll Miss It” (unsigned, UK)
Bo
Pepper
has only been together for around 10 months and the band is already
batting eye-lids from all four corners of the planet. The band
describes itself as being “quite lazy”, but they sure do
make damn good music. With influences ranging from the likes of The
Yeah Yeah Yeahs,
The
Strokes,
The
Killers
and any other band that starts with “The”, you know you
can’t go wrong with Bo Pepper’s unique and infectious
style. The four-piece consists of front woman Dolly, Will E Nailor,
Nicky T and Johnny Dangerous and have collectively created some
amazing demos in main songwriter Dolly’s bedroom and they are
ready to shower you with their hotness. One of these demos, "Blink
And You'll Miss It!” recorded for about 10p (20c) and seemingly
mixed by a deaf child, is currently all over the radio, despite the
band still being unsigned. Global radio powerhouses from the
likes of BBC
Radio 1,
BBC
Radio 2,
6
Music,
Channel
4 Radio UK,
Indie
103.1FMLos
Angeles
and MotorFM
Germany
as well Triple
J Australia
to name a few.
The
band's unique puppet-fronted imagery, created by the boys at Pennymix
Films, makes them stand out from the crowd. Their videos have notched
up over 700,000 hits on the web, making them more famous than Sooty,
less so than Orvill. Bo Pepper has also appeared THREE TIMES on
gossip pal's Perez
Hilton's
website, www.perezhilton.com,
which gets 7 million hits per day. Now that Bo Pepper has made it as
our video of the week…they’re ready to hit the big
time.. right?!

Alternative Specialty Top 20 Releases For Week Beginning
08/20/2007
BECK
IS BLOWIN’ UP: One of the Alternative format’s
defining artists, Beck, tops the Mediaguide Alternative Specialty
chart this week with “Timebomb” (Interscope). Hanging in
strong at #2 are two-time chart-toppers Go! Team (Sub Pop) with the
aptly titled “Grip Like a Vice,” while Astralwerks’
VHS or Beta remain at #3 with “Can’t Believe a Single
Word,” the first single from full-length Bring on the Comets
(which hit stores this week). It was a good week for listeners who
like things that go “boom”: the top debut on the chart
belongs to everyone’s favorite Swedish pranksters, the Hives
(Interscope), with “Tick Tick Boom” (not to be confused
with the old Saliva nugget “Click Click Boom”) bowing at
#4. The frantic first single from the forthcoming The Black and
White Album (which debuts at #5 on the Album end) shows that
Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist and cohorts remain in fine form…and
their upcoming tour pairing with Maroon 5 should be one of the more
interesting shows of the year, if for no other reason than witnessing
how Howlin’ Pelle interacts with Maroon’s young femme
fans. Windy City art-school rockers Office (Scratchie/New Line) move
to #5 on the Singles chart with “The Ritz,” helping
full-length offering A Night at the Ritz land in the #7 slot
on the Album side…and a write-up in the August 30 Los
Angeles Times Weekend Calendar section should only increase
audience awareness for the act that’s mentored by former
Smashing Pumpkin James Iha. Finally, topping the Album chart this
week are the New Pornographers’ Challengers (Matador),
with top Song play going to the enticingly titled “Mutiny, I
Promise You,” which currently clocks in at #11.
