#1
Little Indian
Tricia
Halloran exits KCRW Los Angeles, CA after 15 years of
hosting the eclectic-adult-alternative leaning specialty show, “Brave
New World.” She will continue music supervising full-time at
HUM Music on multiple commercials for top brands like Saturn
and Honda, as well as the ABC TV show Men In Trees,
which was just renewed for it's second season. Please send Tricia
music to this address: Tricia Halloran – Hum Music - 1547 Ninth
Street Santa Monica, CA 90401. Meanwhile, Bjork makes a
triumphant debut at #1 on the Mediaguide ‘Songs’
Chart with massive radio support on first single, “Earth
Intruders” from her One Little Indian/Atlantic album,
Volta. Some of the early ‘new music show’
tastemakers on “Earth Intruders” include Corey O’Brien
-- KXRK Salt Lake City, UT, Josh Venable -- KDGE
Dallas, TX, Llu – WBTZ Burlington, VT -
Plattsburgh, NY, Brian “Brit Chop” Oakes –
KTCZ Minneapolis, MN & Creepy Pete – KFMA
Tucson, AZ among a slew of other Bjork fanatics. In terms of regular
rotation, “Earth Intruders” is seeing some nice rotation
at KIWR Omaha, NE - Council Bluffs, IA (35 spins this week, up
28 from last week), WEQX Albany - Schenectady - Troy, NY (20
spins this week, up 1 from last week) & WROX Norfolk -
Virginia Beach - Newport News, VA (17 spins this week, up 17 from
last week). Lastly, The Artic Monkey’s frantically grasp
for the #1 slot on the ‘Songs’ chart, but end up at #2
severely beaten by the Icelandic princess. However, the boys rocket
to #1 on the Mediaguide ‘Albums’ Chart keeping Bjork
fixed at #2. Nice debuts on the ‘Songs” chart this week

| DJ Llu |
DJ
Llu -- Specialty Music Director & Host of "Early Warning"
WBTZ:
99.9 the Buzz
Burlington,
VT
hhA!:
Llu, how did you get into radio? We know you also work at a
non-profit as well. Would you please tell us a little about your work
outside of radio and at the non-profit?
Llu:
“Believe it or not, I got into radio 13 years ago (and I am
only 26!). I started as a freshman in college at a local community
radio station at Goddard College (WGDR). Hosting that
show opened up a whole new world to me: radio, music, being able to
entertain through imagination and show sets---it was awesome.
Looking back I have also realized that radio in high school got me
through some serious ‘teenage angst.’ After that, I
continued at Castleton State on WIUV and picked up a
whole host of side gigs on a variety of commercial stations around
Vermont.
My ‘initation’ grave yard gig was at a Country
station every weekend for awhile, where I would have to drive an hour
to open the station at 5am. I then basically played syndication
shows for 4 hours while fielding calls from the most random (and
rabid) country radio listeners. Eventually, I did my college
internship at 99.9 The Buzz (WBTZ), where I landed (at
least part time after graduation). Over the past 5 years, I have
carved out the sweet gig of hosting the new music show, "Early
Warning" each week on the Buzz.
My
day job is actually as an Executive Director at Outright Vermont.
This agency is Vermont's only queer youth organization. We address
bullying in schools, provide basic direct service support for queer
youth (social events for example), and basic health prevention
programming. After I graduated college in 2002 I actually had a full
time radio gig at an indie commerical station in Vermont, but was
offered an entry position at Outright Vermont. When I compared the
salaries (believe it or not the non-profit paid MORE than the radio)
and the ‘feeling of getting up everyday and knowing I was doing
something to change the world’---I had to take the non-profit
job. Over the past 5 years I have moved up the ranks to the E.D.
spot. There is tons of more info on Outright on our website:
www.outrightvt.org.”
hhA!:
Who are you e-mailing/speaking with these days in regards to EW
(please name drop).
Llu:
“Ha. Well, that is the rub. I only get paid for 4 hours a
week to roll out EW. Since it is a two hour show, I have very little
time to listen to all the music & hit people back with decent
feedback on the bands. I would say I email most with Pat and
Jon at the Syn, Jeremy at Beggars, Emily
at Astralwerks, Newman at The grill, Alex the
owner of our local (awesome) venue Higher Ground, and (of
course) Rich [hushhush ATTACK!]. These folks really respect
what little time I have to get through the music & give me the
least hard time about being really limited on feedback.”
hhA!:
What is the history of Early Warning?
Llu:
“EW was launched back when the buzz started in the mid 1990s
with the now infamous ‘Steve Picard.’ He hosted
"Spinning Unrest" which was more an alternative alternative
to the already eclectic stuff the Buzz played in regular rotation.
Picard was an eccentric guy to say the least, but his taste in music
was outstanding. Just after I interned in 2001, Picard and Steph
Hindley (aka Monkey, who both started the station, both
left. Lots of changes were afoot for alt radio at that time (and the
Buzz.) The station kept "Spinning Unrest" but Ben
Wiggens (the new host) took over and renamed it to "Early
Warning." He also moved it to more of a "new music"
show, to test potential bands who would go into the rotation. At the
end of 2003 Ben left for NYC and I took over as host. My taste is
somewhere in between the new music and eclectic alternative.”
hhA!:
What are some of your favorite releases at present? What's reacting
on the show?
Llu:
“Currently, I think Amy Winehouse is amazing. Listeners
have really latched onto Arcade Fire, Cold War Kids,
I'm from Barcelona, !!!, and LCD Soundsystem.”
hhA!:
Llu, BTW, Are you a Vermont local?
Llu:
“Yup. Born here, raised here, schooled here, and now work
here.”
