The
panel is psyched about the new BRMC single, “Weapon of Choice”
as over half the panel continues to jam the single, taking the boys
to #1 for the third week in a row. However, Bjork is inching
her way up behind the boys with a #2 debut on first single, “Earth
Intruders” off of her One Little Indian/Atlantic release,
Volta. Tastemaker support from Les Aaron KPNT/St.
Louis, MO, Jonathan L KUPD Phoenix, Ferris O’Brien
KATT Oklahoma, City, OK, Don Yates and crew at KEXP/Seattle -
Tacoma, WA & Dave Hubbell at KFTE Lafayette, LA. Travis
make a nice return to North American airwaves with a Top 5
showing on first single, “Closer” off of The Boy With
No Name (Independiente/Epic/Sony)… Early regular rotation
Travis supporters include: College station WAWL/ Chattanooga, TN &
AAAer’s WRNR & WTMD/Baltimore, MD. Meanwhile, NIN’s
“Survivalism” makes a jump from #33 to #8 on the Songs
chart while the album, Year Zero makes a nest in the Top 5 on
the Albums Chart. PS Coco Rosie (Touch & Go) is
brilliant…. Go to her myspace

If
you ask hhA!, Denmark’s TomBoy AKA Tomas Barfod
is a major slacker. He stopped updating his busy tour schedule on his
myspagepage in November of ’06. What gives Barfod? Well, maybe
he’s just too busy/cool…. He does in fact plays drums
for Whomadewho
and has been crazy releasing a ton of club tracks on labels Gomma,
Kitsune,
Get
Physical Music
& Turbo. Check out the original mix of “Flamingo”
here or the ‘kim-from-the-presets’
remix here. Props again to Big
Stereo.
Where would we be without them?

THOUGH
SHALT NOT READ NME -- “Thou shalt not steal if there is direct
victim. Thou shalt not worship pop idols or follow lost prophets.
Thou shalt not take the names of Johnny Cash, Joe Strummer,
Johnny Hartman, Desmond Decker, Jim Morrison,
Jimi Hendrix or Syd Barret in vain. Thou shalt not
think that any male over the age of 30 that plays with a child that
is not their own is a peadophile... Some people are just nice.
Thou shalt not read NME. Thall shalt not stop liking a band
just because they’ve become popular. Thou shalt not question
Stephen Fry. Thou shalt not judge a book by its cover…”

JOEY
GUISTO/WBER ROCHESTER, NY – Station Manager/Program Director
Hha!:
Joey, how did you get into radio and what is your history in the
field?
JG:
“In 1986, my Mom read that WBER offered a summer radio camp. I
enrolled because I had always been fascinated by radio and being a
D.J. 1989-90: I started my first radio show on WBER 90.5 FM while
attending my senior year of high school.1992-1994: I worked at my
college radio station, WGSU, first as a DJ and then as the
Music Director by my senior year. During the summer of my senior year
at SUNY Geneseo, I returned to WBER as an intern and also had
my own show again. My dream job after college had always been to work
at WBER full time. 1994: After I graduated college, I stayed at WBER
doing my weekly show and created the ‘Indie Show’. In
December, I applied for the job of Assistant Program Director and
Music Director at WBER and on January 15 1995, I started full time as
the Assistant Program Director and Music Director. 2001: During the
Summer of 2001, I was promoted to the position of WBER Station
Manager and Program Director. I'm very lucky to have a job that I
love and look forward to every day.”
hhA!:
Why did you pull the plug on the Indie Show?
JG:
“I retired the WBER Indie Show March 7th after 10+ years. My
decision was mostly due to the fact that so many of the prominent
Indie labels either became part of the major labels, or they changed
from indie distribution to major label distribution. I always had
strict rules that the bands I played on the show would be on indie
labels and have indie distribution. When I started to see fewer and
fewer CD's that would qualify for the show, I realized it was time
for it to retire.I also have a 5 month old son now, and it's tough to
justify going back into work to do the Indie Show (after being there
all day) when he's home wanting to hang out with his Dad! I don't see
the Indie Show ever making a comeback but, I might do a reunion show
from time to time.”
hhA!: What are some of the biggest
records for WBER so far this year?
JG: “The biggest
records for WBER since the new year have been the same records that
were big for us that ended 2006: Damien Rice, Regina
Spektor, Mat Kearney and Brand New!”
hhA!:
…And your favorite releases of 2007?
JG:
“My favorite records of 2007 (so far) are: Modest Mouse,
Bloc Party, Aerogramme, Fall Out Boy, Get
Cape. Wear Cape. Fly and Arcade Fire.”
Blog-In
Okay
fine.. I’ll write about Stereogum.
I’ve put it off as long as humanly possible but it’s for
me to give my two cents on this obviously powerful blog. With
well over 20,000 unique links directly to Stereogum there is no
denying its impact on the music industry. I can’t think
of one A&R person or Publisher who has not scoured this blog in
the past, if you can think of one let me know and we’ll send
them this newsletter and then they will visit the site. There
isn’t too much to say about this blog that has not already been
said but I’ll humor you anyway: its one of the top 3 music
blogs in the world, it combines the words “stereo” and
“gum” with incredible precision, they have managed to
perfect the art of blending blogging with commerce and lastly they
have a pretty sweet logo. Seriously though, I’d highly
recommend to subscribing to Stereogum’s
XML feed
so you can keep up with the cool hep cats on the block. Over
and out!
