Much love to Live 105’s Spud
who accompanied me to the unveiling of KROQ new music show guru
Rodney Bingenheimer’s Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame this
past Friday. There is some footage of the event on youtube… please
gently click here.
Unfortunately, Spud also made me go see INXS with new singer
JD Fortune. His friend Buzz
also showed up at the event wearing a vintage INXS shirt from the ‘Kick’
tour. Please don’t tell anyone. Moving along to the Mediaguide New
Music Show Charts, Bright Eyes returns to the #1 spot again this
week on the singles chart with country tinged track, “Four Winds”
with continued support from Patrick Riesgo (KVGS Las Vegas),
Aaron Axelsen (KITS San Francisco), Sachin Sumadre
(WROX Norfolk, VA), Rodney Bingenheimer (KROQ Los
Angeles) & Andy Langer at (KROX Austin, TX).
And everyone I’ve spoken to at radio this week and last is singing
the praises of Arcade Fire’s Neon Bible which lands at #1 on
the Mediaguide Release chart again this week. Who’s playing
them in medium to heavy rotation??? Well, KDLE Los Angeles of course
with 37 plays this past week (almost 300 plays to date), KROX Austin
& WFNX Boston. KROQ Los Angeles also increased play on Arcade Fire
this past week from 1 to 12 spins. New additions to the chart this week
include: The Dollyrots’ “Because I’m Awesome” &
Idlewild’s “No Emotion.”
Record of The Week:
Amy Winehouse
"SPLAT!" By Shadowscene
MEET: Name: SHAYNE EASTIN Job Title: Production Coordinator
for Alternative Press / Frontwoman for Los Angeles Rock Band "Spider Problem"
Favorite Dance: The Twist
Favorite song of the week: Anything
by Captain Beefheart
Most fun thing you did this week:
I went to Las Vegas this past weekend with my friends band Ima Robot....they
played a show and then we ran around Vegas yelling "We Just Got
Married!" (None of us did....but someday)
Silly tidbit: I have a recurring
dream that I go to Disneyland and I can't find the Pirates of the Caribbean
ride....but i know where it is in real life!!! I keep looking and looking....then
i think i find it but i end up just walking through the whole line and
coming out the other end by Tom Sawyer Island.
Sir Frankie Chan started things off rumbling
in the punk band Operation: Cliff Clavin and was introduced to a world of musicians
who were doing it all on the DIY tip: booking their own tours, shows,
etc. It was this DIY ethic that inspired him to start doing his own
shows after eventually leaving the band. Later, heading off to
Bellingham, WA, FC moved into a live/work space called the Showoff
Gallery and began presenting bands like Death Cab For Cutie,
The Murder City Devils & The Dismemberment Plan to name
a few…. But it really wasn’t until Chan witnessed Calvin Johnson
DJ a party before he started incorporating DJ’ing into his
live shows. Fast forward to 2001 and FC is living and throwing parties
in Seattle while working at a club called Graceland. “It was more
of the same, but we took it even further by inviting bands to do DJ
sets (unheard of at the time) and having dance parties after shows.
The earliest incarnation of the stuff I do now happened there in the
form of a weekly night called MONDAY-FUNDAY! We would have 2
bands play on the floor of the front part of Graceland and DJ’s after…
people loved it,” says Frankie. Finally on his own, Sir Chan moved
to Los Angeles in 2003 and launched iheartcomix
as well as the successful party FUCKING AWESOME with Har Mar
Superstar. Chan eventually partnered up with
Steve Aoki and Mark The Cobra Snake and launched several
other successful parties around the LA area, including: Block Party,
Cinespace Tuesdays, Loose Tooth and SUNDAY-FUNDAY!
Towards the end of that partnership, Frankie started one of hush hush
ATTACK!’s favorite nights, Check Yo’ Ponytail (every Tuesday
at Safari Sam’s). Iheartcomix (records) is blowing up as well
with two fresh releases by Matt & Kim and Protokoll.
Not to mention, “dope” (yes, I’m taking it back) DJ singles by
Ocelot, Le Castle Vania and The Toxic Avenger as well
as an Ocelot full length later in the year… and maybe even a 2nd Matt
& Kim full length as well! Frankie Loves: Danielle &
Ginger, his partner in crime Travis Hayden, these rad kids:
Xavier & Jake in Miami, My!Gay!Husband!, Pretty
Titty, Roxy Cottontail, Flosstradamus, Andrew W.K.,
Sean Blacklist, Acid Girls, Big Stereo, Lazaro
Casanova, Naeem from Spank Rock, Adrian
at Puma, Dan Oh, Guns'n'Bombs, Paparazzi,
Kelly Brooks and Zane Landreth.
Not to miss!!!!!! Check out iheartcomix at SXSWand read the Big Stereo post here

Mr. Tim Pyles is killing it in San Diego,
CA. About a year ago, local promoter and club owner Tim Mays
from The
Casbah offered Tim a
Monday night residency for his now notorious club, Anti-Monday League.
Pyles (as he is affectionately known) has been involved in so many aspects
of the SD scene from the early Halcyon days of riding a Vespa as a Mod
to wearing make-up in the Goth/Industrial world and yes, even to Raving!
Tim has also presented a series of weekly events in Diego over the years
leading up to his current Monday night happening. Currently reacting
on the floor: Nas “Hip Hop Is Dead,” new Arcade Fire,
Klaxons, The Kooks, Some Girls, The Locust
& Ground Unicorn Horn. Tim gives props to the following SD
Scenesters: Scott Pacto, Alan Sanderson, Tim Mays, Brett
Bodie, O, Swami, Rockit Entertainment, Adam
Gimble, Gwen Pyles, Gary Pyles, Cathryn Beeks, Len Paul, Bart Mendoza, Ken Leighton, David Brown, Justin Pearson, Rob Crow, Pall Jenkins, Dwight Jeglor

French electro punks Prototypes release their new self-titled LP on the infamous
indie Chicago based label, Minty Fresh. Big thanks to Anthony Musiala (Licensing guru) for sending out a copy of the
full-length. The video for the infectious single, “Who’s Gonna Sing,”
which was featured in an advertisement for the Ipod Shuffle campaign

Blog-In
It is 1:30pm
and I’m on deadline for this week’s “Blog-In”. I am sipping
my chicken noodle soup when I realize I haven’t even picked a blog
to write about yet. The song playing on my computer is “Pablo Picasso”
by Citizen Cope. (Yes, it’s relevant) I then remember something about
a blog that contained the word Picasso. Easy. I google Picasso
blog and voila, we have our blog-in.
You Ain’t No Picasso was created by a 20 year old white kid from
the University of Kentucky who is a DJ on WRFL-FM, a student-run station in Lexington, KY. Due
to my lack of time, I find his AIM name and conduct a 3 minute interview.
Here are the results: Blog started in November 2004 and currently boasts
just over 5,000 daily page views. The creator is a journalism major
who also works in a record store, so he knows his shit. He hopes that
he can “offer new music to people who are looking for alternatives”
and thinks that the music industry is “in a weird, weird state
right now”. Touché my friend, touché.
