Kids Love PB and J
Peter Bjorn & John’s “Young
Folks” featuring Victoria Bergsman is the most infectious track
to hit North American Radio since Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy”
infiltrated the airwaves in 2006. According to the Mediaguide Airplay
Report, KCRW Santa Monica, CA, KWVA
Eugene - Springfield, OR & WHRV Norfolk - Virginia Beach
- Newport News, VA were the first three stations in the US to step out
on the record, Writer’s Block. On the strength of the single
and album the Swedes rocket up to #1 on the Singles chart as well
as The Releases chart. Leading the pack in terms of regular rotation,
KDLD Los Angeles has spun “Young Folks” a total of 30x from
11/25/06 to 12/01/06 (down 11 spins from last reporting week). At this
point I’m sure most of the industry has seen the brilliant video in
support of “Young Folks,” but for those of you who haven’t please
gently click here.
Meanwhile, Mando Diao’s single, “Long Before Rock 'N' Roll”
(Mute) makes a huge debut at #3 this week on the Singles Chart with
early support from WNNX Atlanta, KUPD Phoenix &
WKQX Chicago to name a few. Other nice debuts include: Aqualung’s
“Pressure Suit,” Kings of Leon's “On Call” &
Calla’s “Sanctify.”
Record of The Week: Expatriate

Aaron
Axelsen & Omar Perez present: Leisure
While
the well-known and highly publicized San Fran club, Popscene
focuses on a core 18-26 year old demo, Leisure caters to a more
mature anglophile bent on hearing Brit pop classics. Over 2 years ago
30 some-things, Omar Perez & Aaron Axelsen (Live
105)
decided to self indulge and launched Leisure to get off on spinning
classic records from Suede, My Bloody Valentine, Pulp, Dandy Warhols,
Stone Roses, Supergrass & Radiohead. Aaron says, “Leisure
is like a flash-back lunch that doesn’t’ feel so novel.
It still feels like it has a purpose and that’s it’s
revolutionary and underground. It’s more low key, while
Popscene is all about looking ahead. You can’t hold on to
everything.” Leisure is a definite alternative to 11 year
strong Popscene which features live shows from up and coming UK or UK
influenced acts such as Amy Winehouse, The View, Klaxons, Maximo
Park, The Fratellis & Albert Hammond Jr. to name a few. The 21+
Leisure goes off every first Saturday of the Month at Annie’s
Social Club,
$5. Oh, and it must be mentioned that the club also has brit-pop
karaoke in the back room.

Yes,
this is the same Robyn AKA Robin Miriam Carlsson from
Sweden who killed it on Top 40 Radio 10 years ago with the
Billboard Top Ten hits “Show Me Love” and “Do You
Know (What It Takes)” Fast forward to 2005… Robyn
leaves Jive Records to start her very own Konichiwa
Records
(a reference to the phrase "Konichiwa bitches!" by the
comedian Dave
Chappelle.
Single, “Konichiwa Bitches” appears on her self-titled
album (her 4th to date) which boasts collaborations with
Klas Åhlund
from Teddybears
STHLM The
Knife
and former Cheiron producer Alexander
Kronlund.
The single will be released in the UK on the 26th of March b/w
remixes from Trentemoller, Menta and Oscar The Punk.

| Ferris O' Brien |
NAME:
Ferris
O' Brien
SHOW:
“Spy Radio”
STATION:
100.5 The
KATT
Oklahoma City, OK
DAY/TIME:
Thursday @ Midnight
There
are a handful of North American programmers on the Mediaguide
specialty show panel that are true Anglophiles; Josh Venable
KDGE/Dallas, Rodney Bingenheimer/KROQ Los Angeles, Sat Bisla/KDLD Los
Angeles & of course Aaron Axelsen/KITS San Francisco to name a
few. KATT’s Ferris O’ Brien is of the same breed
programming currents from UK faves Jarvis Cocker, Kaiser Chiefs &
Clinic. Ferris stumbled on to “this whole radio thing” by
a DJ of a friend of a friend who urged him to get into radio. His
first job was at 94.5 The Edge (the original) in Dallas, TX under the
watchful eye of his mentor George Gimarc. Ferris also had the
privilege of working for two of his favorite radio stations: The Edge
'89-'92 & The Spy '98-'04, may they both R.I.P.”
hhA!:
What is the history of Spy Radio?
FOB:
“With the untimely demise of 105.3 & 93.7 The Spy proper,
‘Spy Radio’ was birthed. As with many an Indie/Alt
leaning station, we had tons of listeners but no one knew how to
sell/market it, therefore the great lady of the airwaves died...
‘Spy Radio,’ hopefully fills in the gaps & gives a
voice to these brilliant artists!!!”

& Wolfmother to name a few. In 2005, Van She released the single,
“Kelly” off their self-titled EP which is just plain ace.
