Top Blokes
V2 America’s demise has not stopped
Bloc Party’s single, “I Still Remember,” from reaching #1 status
this week on the Mediaguide Songs chart after two consecutive weeks
holding at #2 – even with stiff competition from The Arcade Fire’s
“Black Mirror,” (Merge), Boyskout’s “Spotlight” (Three Ring
Records), The Shins’ “Australia” (Sub Pop), Black Tie Dynasty’s
“I Like U” (Idol), The Wolfmen’s “Jackie Says” (Damaged Goods,
UK) & The View’s “Wasted Little DJ’s” (1965/Columbia). There
is so much material out at radio right now, specifically new music (specialty
shows) that Bloc Party landed a #1 showing with a total of only
14 specialty shows supporting their single, beating out Albarn’s
The Good, The Bad & The Queen’s “Herculean” by only one
spin. All the smart specialty ‘tastemakers’ stations playing Bloc
Party’s single in medium to heavy rotation include: KITS San Francisco;
27 plays (of course, shouts out to Spud & Aaron!), WFNX Boston,
MA; 21 plays & uber indie WEQX Manchester, VT; 23 plays… I could
go on, but just go pull up Mediaguide
and track the records/singles. If you want to find out which specialty
stations Mediaguide monitors for their Songs and Releases charts go here.

| Jay Harren |
Post graduation (1997) aspiring musician Jay Harren
began interning (well, working for no pay) under then direction of
Leslie Fram and then 99X (WNNX Atlanta, GA) music director Sean
Demery and instantly fell in love with the art of programming having
watched these industry pros perform their craft with such excitement,
enthusiasm, and passion. Eventually, a full-time job opened-up in the
promotions dept at the station and Jay assumed the position (pun intended).
After two years of setting up remotes, driving the station vans and
handing out promo stickers to strange listeners, Leslie Fram offered
Jay the opportunity to assist her in the programming department and
eventually allowed him to start the now infamous Sunday School
specialty show, which he ruled with a pink iron fist for 6 beautiful
Brit-pop filled years. During this glorious time Mr. Harren was promoted
to Music Director of 99X (2002) and quickly realized that he was cut
out more as a programmer rather than as a musician and decided to begin
helping "break" artists. Shortly thereafter, after he found
an exciting Atlanta band called The Hiss,
who along with the help of a business partner secured the local band
a deal with Loog/Polydor and quickly watched the band go from playing
in front of 15 kids at a bar in Atlanta to touring Germany with Oasis.
Jay described the process as, "an incredible feeling," and
he instantly knew that he needed to do A&R for a living. Last May,
99X was acquired by a major radio corporation and Jay's dream became
a reality as the Music Director position was promptly eliminated and
he picked up the A&R position at Columbia.
Current Listening: The Slip (Bar None Records), Manchester Orchestra
(Favorite Gentlemen), Coldwar Kids (Downtown Records), Albert Hammond, JR.
(Newline Records)

Pulling A Geographic – The Wombats Make A Push for
NY
“Moving
To New York” was released on Kids Records/UK on 23rd
October 2006 with b-side “Party
in a Forest (Where's Laura?)”
on limited edition vinyl which sold out immediately. Yes, I realize
it’s 2007, but the song and the video are absolutely worth three-and-a-bit minutesof your miserable
day. The Wombats are gaining quite a lot of attention outside of their
hometown of Liverpool, England in more exotic places like China, Canada,
France & Malawi. Odds are you have never heard of The Wombats until
now so enjoy the video and make sure to hustle your way into their packed
live shows at SXSW in Austin, TX from March 14th – 18th
(check their myspage page for updated venue
information).
